Can an employee work multiple shifts in a day?

Yes, you can set that up.

There are a couple approaches:

1) Allow multiple open shifts. This allows the employee to work at any time without having to set up a schedule. You just specify how long each shift may be.

2) Set up multiple shifts on a schedule.

3) Allow employee to work late on existing shift

If you'd like to schedule these shifts, first check out our help article on setting that up:

I. Multiple Open Shifts

To allow multiple Open shifts, or an Open shift after an earlier Scheduled shift, you'll want to enable that option under the Open Shift Defaults settings. Look for the checkbox labeled "Allow multiple shifts per days".

You'll want to reevaluate the maximum length of your shifts, as well as the Advanced Settings for "Maximum time clocked out during shift" and "Minimum time between shifts". For the most flexibility, you can set those two advanced settings to 0.

II. Multiple Scheduled Shifts

You can simply create multiple shifts per day in the shift calendar under Manage => Schedule:

When an employee clocks IN to a new shift, Fareclock will choose the most appropriate matching shift. It will first try to find the latest matching scheduled shift with a fixed time. Of course, a shift that has already been used will not be reused that day. If there is no match, it will try to find a match on a scheduled flexible shift. If there is still no match, and if Open Shifts are allowed, then it will use an Open Shift.

III. Editing and Reporting Time Cards

Both the Time Cards editor and report split out time cards for each shift to make it easier to identify what you're looking at.

III. Allow working late

If you want to allow an employee to work past the end of the shift, you can "Allow punches outside range" in Manage => Time Cards. And if you want to make further changes to the employee's shift after it's begun, you can even change the "Shift Class", perhaps to a longer shift with different rules.
