Geo fences allow you to restrict where employees can clock in, ensuring punches only occur within approved locations. If an employee tries to clock in outside the set area, the punch will be rejected or flagged.
Geo fences can be applied based on:
- User – Allows the assignment of geo fence settings specific to individual users.
- Device – Restricts all punches on a specific time clock device.
- Shifts – Applies location rules to specific shift classes.
- Schedule – Allows you to restrict a geo fence to be active only within a specific schedule.
- Jobs – Sets custom geo fences for different jobs, with separate rules for clocking in and out.
Follow the steps below to set up geo fences and ensure accurate time tracking.
Enable
Step 1: Go to the Fareclock Admin Console and go to Settings. Under ‘Settings’ find and click ‘Devices’.
Step 2: Click the ‘Defaults’ tab above.
Step 3: In the ‘Geo Settings’ section, select the geo location tracking mode to enable.
a. Live with Breadcrumbs & Geofences:
Track user locations in the background while they are Clocked In and display breadcrumb history points on the map. The system sends periodic heartbeats to detect possible connection or location tracking issues.
You can enable geofences to automatically Clock In users when they arrive at the job site, automatically Clock Out when they leave, and trigger alerts when users enter or exit a geofence.
Fareclock does not track worker locations in the background when they are not Clocked In.
b. Live with Geofences:
Track user Clock In and Clock Out locations. You can enable geofences to automatically Clock In users when they arrive at work, automatically Clock Out when they leave, and send alerts when they enter or exit a geofenced area.
c. Clock IN & OUT with Geofences:
Track user Clock In and Clock Out locations. You can also set up geofences for these locations to control and monitor where users are allowed to clock in and out.
Step 4: After selecting the checkbox, additional configuration options will appear below. Adjust these settings according to your organization's preference/needs.

To Create a Geo Fence
Step 1: Click the ‘Geo Fences’ tab above.
Step 2: To add a geo fence, click the ‘+ Add Geo Fence’ button.
Step 3: Name the geo fence, edit the geo fence region, and set the policy.
To set the geo fence region, click the ‘Edit’ link to open the geolocation selection window.
In this window, enter an address or move the red pin marker on the map to set the geo fence location. Adjust the range using the ‘Geofence Range’ slider or drag the green circle’s edge.
For a custom-shaped geo fence, click the shape button in the top right, then select each vertex to draw the shape. Users can also create non-circular polygon geo fences for more precise area coverage. A supporting circle will be added for compatibility with older app versions.
Keep in mind that GPS sensors can sometimes be inaccurate, so it's best to allow some margin for error. When finished, click the ‘Confirm Location’ button.
Assigning Geo Fence
1. User - If the worker clocks in using their own phone, you can set a geo fence in their personal device settings.
Step 1: Go to the Fareclock Admin Console and go to Settings. Under ‘Settings’ find and click ‘Users’.
Step 2: Select a user from the list and under 'Personal Device Settings’ modify the geo fence settings.
2. Device
Step 1: Go to the Fareclock Admin Console and go to Settings. Under ‘Settings’ find and click ‘Devices’.
Step 2: Select a device from the list and adjust its geofence settings under 'Extra Information.’
3. Shifts
Step 1: Go to the Fareclock Admin Console and go to Manage. Under ‘Manage’ find and click the ‘Schedule’.
Step 2: Select the worker whose shift requires geo fence setting adjustments.
4. Jobs
Step 1: Go to the Fareclock Admin Console and go to Settings. Under ‘Settings’ find and click ‘Costing’.
Step 2: Click the ‘Jobs’ tab above.
Step 3: In the 'Permissions' section, you can modify the geo fence settings.
Note that each of these options allows you to set up multiple geo fences, e.g., if you want, you can allow a worker to clock in/out at multiple geo locations.
Troubleshooting Geo-Fencing Issues
Fareclock includes tools to help admins quickly identify and resolve geo-fencing issues without switching between multiple screens.
1. Geo Mapping Clock Logs
You can annotate selected geo fences and jobs (including their geo fences) and view them alongside Clock Logs.
- Useful when a worker can’t clock IN to a job.
- Quickly compare the geo fence or job location they are supposed to be at with the actual logs.
- View everything in one place with a clear map for easier comparison.
Step 1: Go to the Fareclock Admin Console and go to Manage. Under ‘Manage’ find and click ‘Geo Mapping’.
Step 2: Click the ‘Clock Logs’ button.
2. Clickable Address and Location Coordinates
Addresses and GPS coordinates in various areas link directly to Google Maps for verification.
- The info window popup for a geo fence includes these links.
Links are also available under Clock Logs, Raw Punches, and in the Geo Fence editor.
3. Quick Access to Geo Fence Details
The geo fence selection box includes a magnifying glass icon that opens a modal with full geo fence details.
Available in areas such as the Job Form Editor, and when assigning geo fences to users, schedules, and more.
